ReplyDeleteOptional Assignment #1 on Katelyn Crawford’s Position Paper
12/ 30/09
McGeorge Bundy was the National Security advisor to JFK during the events in 1962. During his time in office, relations between the US and the USSR were very tight, partially because of the political relationship between the USSR and Cuba. The only relief in this period of the Cold War was the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the US removed nuclear missiles from Turkey in return for the USSR removing its nuclear missiles from Cuba. When Fidel Castro overthrew the Cuban ruler and took leadership for himself, the new Cuban government was acknowledged by the US. However, the United States soon became aware that Cuba was supported by and allianced with the Soviet Union. Because of this the American government set up an invasion to overthrow the Castro regime. However, during Kennedy’s rule in 1961, this plan was carried out and ended disastrously. The Soviets accused the Americans of attempting to overthrow Cuba, which due to the alliance was an attack on the Soviets.

ReplyDeleteQuestion 1: responding to Ural Alexis Johnson
Johnson was a United States diplomat. He was born in kansas in 1908. He is fluent in japenese thus leading him to be able to manage Africa, East Asia, Pacific, Eurasia, near east, south, and central Asia, the western hempsphere, international organizations, international narcotics and law enforcement. He also had a role in advising the secretary of state on major foreign relations developments and various foreign issues. Alexis advised the secretary of state on issues such as the invasion of the bay of pigs. The secretary of state then advised the president. Alexis had an advantage because he was fluent in so many languages. This made talking to officials from other nations and negotiating in poland a wee bit easier. Alexis was also a very worldy character, therefore his knowledge of other nations and cultures aided the United States when they needed allies. Alexis was the third ranking position in the department of state and helped a great deal with foreign matters.

ReplyDeleteAssignment #1 - Robert McNamara
Robert McNamara Served as the United States Secretary of defense under both Kennedy and Johnson. While he was a very intelligent man, he did not posses a great aptitude for nation defense. He helped Kennedy alter the military policy to better deal with international conflicts. He worked with Kennedy to make the military more flexible and less violent. McNamara also worked to increase the nation's "limited warfare" capabilities. McNamara plays a large role in the Cuban Missile Crisis and later the defusing of the Crisis. He created the Defense Agency, the Defense Communication Agency and Defense Supply Agency. He would also later work on many of the military plans in Vietnam.

Kenya’s Position Paper
After the Berlin Conference, Africa was split up between the European powers. Kenya was given to Great Britain. African resistance began when Britain took farming land and designated that it could only be used by whites. Africans had no money so they were forced to pay their taxes through labor. After WWI, Africans became more aware of their history and had learned, through missionary schools, about freedom, justice, and love. The Mau Mau rebellion led to the British granting Kenya independence in 1963. The first president of Kenya, Kenyatta, warned the people about the dangers of communism. Also, Kenya doesn’t support nuclear weapons. Since Kenya has been wrapped up in trying to gain respect from other world powers, they have not been concerned with human rights.

The resolution proposing that the UN should work to dissolve the Soviet Union must not be passed by the UN and certainly should not be voted on favorably by the Soviet Union or our allies. Even though they propose to aid us economically, it is only to help dissenters take control in an effort to set up democracy. They also say that they want to cease all trade with any government under the Warsaw Pact. This is clearly favoring the United States and their views and not even considering our wishes and concerns.
The resolution proposing that Cuban refugees cannot enter the United States without regulation is a good resolution to be passed because this will keep more people in Cuba and under communist control. The Cuban government is unable to keep its people on its land and more people are fleeing to the democracy land. We don’t want communism to appear as a failure and if the amounts of Cubans that are allowed to go to the United States are regulated, then the total number of people leaving will decrease.

ReplyDeleteMikhail Andreyevich Suslov is a strong communist idealogist and a firm defender of Marxist-Leninist orthodoxy. He is extremely conservative and thinks that conformity is the best policy. Detesting Western philosophy, Suslov strongly believes that no one should ever deviate from communism. He sees Khrushchev as an obstacle for his own powerful desires. Favoring the former leader, Stalin, Suslov disagrees with the way Khrushchev chooses to run the country. Suslov is a fervent opponent to Khrushchev due to his loosening of the terms of communism. He feels that Khrushchev is not strict enough with his interpretation and he feels that Khrushchev is ruining the Soviet Union's economy due to the removal of the Five-Year Plans. Suslov sees Khrushchev as unreliable and a poor leader.

ReplyDeleteThe resolution regarding Cuban refugees could prove negative for communism and the communist bloc. Refugees from Cuba give off the idea that Cuba could potentially be a failure and that the people disagree with its policies. This would look very bad for the Soviet Union and this should not be able to happen. The ban on immigration should be kept in place. The Cuban government should be able to keeps its own people in its own country on its own little island.
The resolution regarding the containment of Soviet communism is a bad resolution and therefore, should not be passed. Soviet communism is the ideal social and governmental system and is superior to others around the world. Ideas of the disbandment or the Soviet's losing power over the Warsaw Pact is also negative. Other countries against the Soviet Union should not be provided aid or military support. This would not be very beneficial for the world community with more powerful heads bumping.

ReplyDelete#1: C. Douglas Dillon by Taylor Sadarananda
C. Douglas Dillon was the Secretary of Treasure in the 1960’s. He was responsible for controlling the public debt, maintaining coins and currency, and recommending and formulating domestic and international financial, economic, and tax policies. He also helped President Kennedy deal with the Cuban Missile Crisis as he was part of the National Security Council and part of the EXCOMM. President Kennedy increased the amount of nuclear missiles being built and he organized secret schemes to get rid of Fidel Castro as a response to his failed Bay of Pigs plan. Relations with the USSR were getting worse and worse, especially after the Bay of Pigs incident. After President Kennedy was informed that the USSR was now placing missiles in Cuba, all contact and relations with Cuba were cut off immediately.
